AbstractDigital Elevation Models (DEM) are generated from remote sensing images and may be applied to different studies. This study, using ASTER sensor images as input, aimed at: 1) testing a DEM extraction model to study areas with distinct topographic setting; 2) develop and analyze topographic maps of areas of interest: Sao Paulo (SP) and Rio de Janeiro (RJ), and 3) evaluate the altimetry using quoted points extracted from topographic maps on the 1:50,000 scale through random sampling stratified by altitude classes. DEMs were obtained from the original data of the 3N and 3B bands of the sensor with resolution of 15 meters applying the AsterDTM algorithm to three images, which characterized the main features of local relief. The DEM were correlated (r = 0.98) to the official topographical mapping data. However, it was necessary to adjust the results, given the values were approximately 20 m lower than the reference. The integrated processing of SRTM and ASTER data in AsterDTM proved to be an alternative for the adequacy of the results. It is recommended for further studies using AsterDTM or another module for processing, that the ASTER DEMs are evaluated for altimetry through statistical analysis or with the integration of data from other sources, such as the SRTM, and/or field control points, which may be useful for planimetric assessment.
